The Balkan rakija tradition centers on plum. In Serbian ethnography the plum is close to sacred, and the social knowledge around šljivovica was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022 UNESCO ICH.

The same spirit wears many names across borders: šljivovica (Serbia), slivovice (Czech, e.g. Rudolf Jelínek), slivova (Bulgaria's Troyan), pălincă / țuică (Romania), and śliwowica (Poland's Łącko). Craft houses range from village family stills (Rakija iz Rakije) to large exporters.
